About Spegra Tablet

Spegra Tablet is a prescription antiretroviral medicine used to manage Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in eligible adults and children. It contains Dolutegravir, Emtricitabine, and Tenofovir Alafenamide, which work together to suppress HIV replication and reduce the amount of virus present in the blood.

Spegra Tablet is designed as a complete HIV treatment regimen for appropriate patients. Therefore, patients should not add or stop other HIV medicines unless their healthcare professional recommends a change in treatment.

For effective HIV management, take Spegra Tablet regularly and at approximately the same time each day. Consistent treatment helps maintain adequate medicine levels in the body and reduces the risk of HIV developing resistance.

Spegra Tablet may be taken with or without food. However, always follow the specific instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist.

Uses of Spegra Tablet

Spegra Tablet is primarily used for:

  • HIV-1 Infection: It helps control HIV-1 infection by suppressing viral multiplication, lowering the viral load, and supporting the function of the immune system.
Key Benefits of Spegra Tablet
Convenient Once-Daily Treatment

Spegra Tablet combines three antiretroviral medicines into a single tablet. Therefore, it can simplify the daily treatment routine for patients for whom this regimen is appropriate.

Helps Suppress HIV

The combination of Dolutegravir, Emtricitabine, and Tenofovir Alafenamide targets HIV replication through different mechanisms. As a result, it helps reduce the amount of HIV in the blood when taken consistently.

Supports Immune Function

Effective HIV treatment can reduce viral activity and allow the immune system to maintain or improve its ability to fight infections. Regular medical monitoring helps healthcare professionals assess treatment response.

Helps With Long-Term HIV Management

Consistent antiretroviral treatment helps keep HIV under control and can reduce the risk of HIV-related complications. Therefore, continue taking the medicine as prescribed even when you feel well.

Directions for Use

Take Spegra Tablet exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

  • Take the tablet once daily or according to your prescribed treatment schedule.
  • You may take it with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet unless your doctor specifically advises you to do so.
  • Take it at approximately the same time every day.
  • Do not stop treatment without consulting your doctor.

Moreover, maintaining a regular dosing routine is important because missed doses may reduce the effectiveness of HIV treatment and increase the possibility of resistance.

How Does Spegra Tablet Work?

Spegra Tablet contains three active ingredients that target HIV replication at different stages.

Dolutegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI). It blocks the HIV integrase enzyme, which the virus needs to insert its genetic material into the DNA of human immune cells. Therefore, it interferes with an important stage of HIV replication.

Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Alafenamide belong to the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) group. They interfere with HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme required for the virus to produce new genetic material.

Together, these medicines inhibit HIV replication and help lower the viral load. As a result, consistent treatment can help maintain better control of HIV infection and support immune function.

Important Precautions

Before starting Spegra Tablet, tell your doctor about your complete medical history and all medicines you currently use.

Inform your doctor if you:

  • Have kidney problems
  • Have liver disease
  • Have or have had Hepatitis B infection
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Take prescription medicines, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements

Do not take Spegra Tablet with dofetilide unless your healthcare professional specifically confirms that the combination is appropriate. Dolutegravir can interact with dofetilide and may increase the risk of serious problems.

In addition, medicines or supplements containing aluminium, magnesium, calcium, or iron may affect dolutegravir absorption. Therefore, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to schedule antacids or mineral supplements around your Spegra dose.

Possible Side Effects

Some patients may experience side effects while taking Spegra Tablet. Commonly reported effects can include:

  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

However, side effects vary from person to person and may improve as the body adjusts to treatment.

Seek prompt medical attention if you develop a severe skin rash, facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe weakness, or other unusual symptoms.

Spegra Tablet and Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak with your doctor before using Spegra Tablet. Your healthcare professional will consider your individual circumstances and recommend an appropriate HIV treatment plan.

Do not start, stop, or change HIV treatment during pregnancy without medical guidance.

Spegra Tablet and Hepatitis B

Tell your doctor if you have Hepatitis B or have previously been diagnosed with Hepatitis B. Spegra Tablet contains medicines that are active against Hepatitis B, and stopping treatment without appropriate medical supervision may cause Hepatitis B to worsen.

Therefore, your doctor may recommend appropriate monitoring if you have current or previous Hepatitis B infection.
